OmniDiskSweeper for Mac is a powerful utility to find unneeded files and restore disk space.

Use a computer long enough and all users run into the same problem: unused data taking up significant disk space. If you have ample disk space, this problem may go unnoticed. But if you have limited disk space or are striving to keep your SSDs below certain performance thresholds, it can be a headache.

For Mac users, this is where OmniDiskSweeper comes into play, and this program recently became freeware, which makes it an even more attractive option. What OmniDiskSweeper does is scan your drives and provide information about the files contained on them. The Drive List pain shows you all of your local drives as well as any network drives that you may have access.

That list provides information about the drive, such as total, used and available capacity. To scan a driver, click its icon to highlight it, and then, press the Sweep button. The OmniDiskSweeper scanner is not the fastest around, but it is not slow either and it is stable and well-optimized. Smaller drives will not take long at all. Drives with terabytes of data can take a while.

When the sweep is complete, OmniDiskSweeper will list all of the files on disk. Since the sheer amount of data can be overwhelming, it also provides a number of different ways to view the data. You can also view subsets of data via various filters, such as applications, utilities and media. You can sort these data sets based on their actual size, their size on disk and the last time the data was accessed.

At the bottom of the data view pane, the program shows you the various packages associated with the data you are looking at. One thing that OmniDiskSweeper is providing easier access to the exact package associated with a particular file as well as file meta information.

If you want to get rid of a particular file, that is as simple as highlighting the filename and clicking the Delete button. A dialog box will then prompt you: Destroy the selected files? Click the Cancel or Destroy button. Note that files destroyed may not be recoverable. If you prefer to put the file in your recycle bin, you may want to make note of it and delete it through other means.
